The DM Lair makes weekly videos with information and resources to help game masters run awesome games.
I've been GMing on and off since high school, most notably running D&D 2e, 3.5e, 5e and Pathfinder 2e games. I currently run two different tabletop RPG games. My goal is to share the knowledge and experience I've obtained over the years to help other GMs, especially new ones, level up their games.

How to Design a D&D Heist Adventure
If that player is actually fighting for the ball and not just blocking the other guy and if he really is only using his shoulder and not also his arms and hands, you might actually be right with your ruling on the soccer example.
It's funny how Luke never learns that English a bunch of people's second language, but he's right, that doesn't stop others from being bad at it.
the famous DM was Wil Wheaton
The 2 Types of backstories "He was exiled from his kingdom, and lost everything. He's now willing to do anything to get his revenge." "He got drunk 1 night and joined the party, and is too Socially anxious to say no."
In response to two reasons teachers quit teaching, I’ve heard from my cousin, a teacher here, that the two reasons teachers quit are the entitled parents and entitled students lol. Seriously though, teachers need more respect, resources and better pay.
i just got myself a baby hydra mini and ive dry brushed a white primer since it was a grey from resin printing and im sure the vender i bought it from washed them well
Nah, it is chilli and nachos cheese.
Rutabagas are a tasty tuber-ish thing my Mammaw always added to our winter soups. I still love them. North Louisiana btw.
Ok, here is a question that lingers within my dnd groups. I am probably the cause of it even existing. About a year ago, as a new DM, I was watching a lot of videos on how to be a good DM, many of your videos being particularly helpful. In fact, a video from yourself and one from the dungeon dudes said similar things, and that is that rolling a 20 does not necessarily guarantee an automatic success. If the DC of a task is so high, (the jumping over the moon type scenario) it just isn’t possible, even if you do roll a 20. That very night , I used a gelatinous cube in a fight. The cube has an AC of 6. One of my players had a plus 7 to hit. It wasn’t possible, mathematically, for them to fail to hit. And of course, they rolled a 1, a critical fail. That really bothered me. I thought about it for days. I concluded that by any sense of logic and rational thought, you can only have a critical hit if you hit, and you can only have a critical fail if you fail. I can’t, in good conscience, enforce a critical fail if they actually succeeded. And I can’t award a critical success, if they didn’t succeed. In a recent game with a new player at the table. I had determined before the game that a certain task would be really hard. I gave it a DC of 35 if the players attempted before a certain condition was met, a dc of 25 once the criteria was met. Of course this player attempted the task before the conditions were met, using a skill for which they had no proficiency or modifier, and they rolled a 20. He was visibly disappointed that I didn’t grant him an automatic crit success. I explained that despite a high roll, he had not even come close to matching the DC. He claimed the 20 overrides the DC. I said no it doesn’t, I can’t award a critical success if you didn’t succeed. I recognize I am in the minority in this opinion, and it goes against long standing tradition if not the actual rules as written. but I contend it is the only cohesive and logical way to view it. What do you think?
17:36 > with a large grain of salt ..and a long rest.
{Job 22:28 ESV} "{28} You will decide on a matter, and it will be established for you, and light will shine on your ways."
Then you have that one that guy that ruins all this by being a murderhobo or lawful or chaotic stupid
Good advice I enjoy the hostile NPCs too
When the pcs get a reward give them a random item (a frozen squid, frog tounge jerkey/a brined cow bladder) and they will never forget it😂
The most memorable moment I had playing was a homebrewed game that combined dnd with another game or two. I tried to sneak into a room, but blew our cover. We end up being confronted by everyone in the room, but one "enemy" I tried attacking wasnt fighting back. So i stopped attacking and talked to them. A short conversation and invitation later, we now had some kind of metal golem/warforged living tank join the group. Still slightly unsure what exactly he was, because he left next session. He either malfunctioned or returned to his creator. Never saw him again, but I get it, he was too op for the level we were at
I had a player get upset with me because I wouldn't change the rules of the game to benefit their character, and I wouldn't punish other players for their poor gameplay. They kept saying I was unfairly targeting them. I countered that their character had 10 AC in a high level game, and chose to forego all defensive options despite me giving them multiple chances to pick up defensive spells or defensive magic items from magic shops or with the ring of spell storing i gave to every player as part of my story. Dumped Dexterity, 2nd lowest stat was constitution, not proficient in armor (sorcerer), didn't take any defensive spells, didn't have anyone who could cast defensive spells load their spell ring with them, and wouldn't buy defensive magic items or spell scrolls ( my magic shop had some of everything and i gave them a good amount of gold at the start of the campaign with which to buy stuff). At every opportunity they neglected defensive stuff, which is their right as a player, but then got mad at me for their low survivability. In a tier 3 game, they chose to rock a 10 AC. Tier 3 as in every monstet has at least a +8 to hit, and some have a +10 or higher, it was virtually guaranteed that they were going to get hit if a monster attacked them, which always happened because they chose to make themselves an easy target flying 20 feet above the battle field instead of taking cover. This player always said they wanted their choices to matter and got pissed off when they did. They asked why I didn't attack the other players as much as them... I did, when it made sense to. If there were 12 enemies and 4 players, each player got 3 enemies. Not my fault their character got hit 6 times by creatures with +9 attacks, and the other players with defensive tricks and items and spells also got attacked 6 times but only hit once or twice.
does anyone have any advice on dming? Ive played for less than a year (7 monthsish) and I dont know the rules great, Ive watched loads of videos and Im still terrified to start :,) Im playing with a few friends many who are new to it but one or two of them have played loads, I dont wanna mess it up D:
Cat lady...you said to do it.
I’ve modeled PCs off anime characters but it’s not over the top like one of my pcs legit just take Gabimaru back story being almost killed by his clan for wanting to leave with his wife that’s it.
IMO you need something to catch the interest of your players within the first moments of when you're introducing the NPC. Something like a standout look, a weird accent, an impressive "entrance" or a memorable name (even a nickname given by the party might work, so pudding pot might have been much more memorable than Luke thinks) or some kind of odd behavior or quirk. The important part is that it must be something that is visible immediatly when the character appears. If the players like it - great, if the players hate - also fine, as they will at least still remember it and at worst will only interact with the characters for some minutes anyways.
This is when you have open conversation with your players about the story and game you as a GM want to play, because that is just as important as the story and game your players want to play.
All i see is... S t e a l and Modify the things to work better.
If it was me, it be like Fallout's speech checks where you use thr most applicable (and or your highest skill) to argue, defend or retrot and 40% of thr effect relies on the little speech. So like if you are aruging with Wizard and your barbarian starts to talk about how he is going to break hin apart graphically, it is most likely going to have the Wizard running or so distracted your Rogue can bonk him. Also i would have it so the more amped up and mad someone get, the more likely like a colour flash could stun them or a skilled talker could use their words to force a combantant to be bound to their words intill the talker say gets hit in the face or startled.
Cartoon network has been repeating the same 3 shows always over and over for years now.
I think the way you should write a backstory is however your group decides to do things - my group has a campaign to get us used to combat (as only one of us had ever played before) so we were essentially murder hobos because we didn’t know what we were doing. This was our test run. Now we’re currently level 6ish in a campaign where all of us have personal goals (and I have a twist in my backstory that me and my DM worked out that I haven’t told my fellow players yet that has had some very fun consequences lately). I don’t think there is a correct way to play, but it mostly depends on your group.
I didn't know Wayne Rooney used and American accent and had a YT GMing channel
So "nat 20 = success" is one of your pet peeves? I'd like to see a video of your top-10 pet peeves with the rules of D&D (and maybe another with your top-10 pet peeves with Pathfinder), and what you do about them in-game.
I think for then risk one honestly there’s so many ways to make bad things happen to a player that’s not death like lose a big battle but if it’s people who don’t wanna die like losing a limb cause of a really bad fight and now they have some effect like a stat decrease, not being able to use two handed weapons, losing a leg and with it 10ft of movement speed and such
Gygax had nothing to do with 2nd edition, the company was stolen from under his nose before its release, and you're correct WoTC owned D&D for 3rd edition onward.
Possibly two other possible solutions to the "I gave out too many magic items!" problem - your opinions? (1) Occasional heralded or unheralded "no mana" zones where the magic items - oh, no! - don't work (they become mundane). This idea could even be used as a trap. (2) There is an environmental massive event ("mana cyclone", anyone?) that permanently nerfs the magic items in question. Give the PC's a way to prevent it first, but if they fail...
I decided to put a business in for the characters, realized halfway through I was doing my version of acquisitions Incorporated. Started a smith business for them, the adventures were going on networking mission, where they slay dragons and gain access to new materials. I will see how this will go.
Too often we just get lists - love that you talk about the why for the rules. Also love your delivery.
I couldn't finish. That blinking sound was so jarring. It kept distracting me from the conversation.
It's so funny that people cheat / fudge in such an easy game like DND5e. If your goal is to always win and never lose its already SO simple to guarantee that with the options the game gives you. Why try to do something so underhanded?
I quit a friend group game of pathfinder as I realized because of my ADHD, I got bored easily and waiting my turn felt like it took forever, the long gaming sessions didn’t help either. It wasn’t fair to myself and the group, so I told my friend that I was quitting for those reasons I can physically sit still for hours, my mind can’t, I have to be doing something or I begin to wander
Plz will you fix Beastiary 1 and 2, i was distracted the whole video lol
How many intended ally NPCs have been murder-hoboed upon first appearance?
Related to the dinosaur discussion, I'm fairly certain the "velociraptors" in Jurassic Park are actually Utah raptors
As a dm , I’m actually with the barbarian here . A 19 ac and auto disadvantage, 17 hp per strap and there’s three of them. Just let your players have some fun for once . Maybe if This was the big bad , but this is just a griffon knight . Also you should have warned them how difficult this would be . At least tell them that there’s 3 straps first
If the saddle has a 19 or higher armor class and is that durable , then I’m going to wear it as armor
Luke isn't just a good DM. I nominate Luke to be my honorary big brother.
This is why spells like Silvery Barbs are so popular, they just work. The only thing that really counters it is counterspell or othet anti-magic. I imagine this is also why big-boom-damage spells like fireball are so popular and "overused". 😅
Also the edited score will be highlighted, so it's quite obvious already by looking at the character sheet
Most of these applied to me, but the ones that probably stood out for me is the fact I wasn’t having fun anymore. I just wanna be a player again for now-
Had my group who was complaining how my dming was too linear and how they have to do the mission I prepared saying I took fun away from them. I’m sorry but that’s the whole point of following the main story, they made the decision to do so, there’s thousands of other things they could explore but didn’t. *How is that me being too linear-*
My friend played a character like this once. He was a super famous marksmen hero who never missed a shot. Seems pretty typical, but the kicker was that his character died. Many years before the campaign took place. He was a zombie, revived by some sort of powerful necrotic magic, that broke free of that magic. He was level 1 because he can’t fire a bow as well when he’s a rotting corpse.
I've had two DMs that were like this, DM 1, granted he was running a module very straightlaced, but ironically hated random encounters which made travel very boring in 5E's underdark campaign. He essentially rail roaded me (on a stealth roll where I rolled like a 26 against a group of wererat's passive perceptions which are like 17 at best) cause the module said to, ruined bards for me tbh although I may play one again soonish. DM 2 though, he was/is terrible at balancing, and let my buddy get like 28 AC as a paladin due to magic items and armor... he then proceeded to never roll below a 30 for any attack for the five sessions paladin buddy remained before he got fed up with DM 2 fudging his rolls so blatantly. As an aside, he also plays in my CoS game, and was having supernatural "luck" always rolling 15 or higher before modifiers on his physical dice (we were all online cause this group spans all of North America sans Mexico) and even the other players started commenting on how insanely unlikely it was, calling him out on it. Once I made everyone start using dndbeyond's dice his "luck" stopped being so exceptional.
Definitely include the word not. “I could NOT care less” not “I could care less”
can fix that by saying 'I could care less... but not much'
1:00:00 - The story of the person who had mental health issues was strangely heartwarming due to the writer using it as an opportunity to thank their players for helping them. I hope that GM is able to heal, and am glad they have a support network in the people they game with. If those folks are truly as helpful as the story suggest then those are friends to cherish through life.
